The\nleading topic of this year’s edition of Freedom Games is \u201cA\nPost-Pandemic World\u201d. The\nCOVID-19 pandemic has become a planet-wide event of an unprecedented\nscale<\/strong>.\nIn just a few months, the coronavirus killed hundreds of thousands of\npeople, millions have been infected. The majority of global\neconomies have been shut down. The lockdown has affected almost 2.7\nbillion of employees, which constitutes approximately 81% of global\nworkforce. Since the beginning of the pandemic, over 40 million\nAmericans applied for the unemployment benefit. This is situation\nworse than even in the case of Great Depression. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This\nis why it is worth using these strange times to reflect and talk\nthings over, in an attempt to set a new course for the \u201cnew normal\u201d\nin a post-pandemic world. COVID-19\nacts as a global stress-test<\/strong>.\nOn how well do states and their institutions pass depends not only\ntheir global standing, but also whether citizens will trust them. The\ntime for evaluation is yet to come \u2013 after the first peak incidence\ndecreases, the governments should be able to confront the\nunprecedented economic crisis. How will our everyday lives change\n(work, leisure, entertainment, private life)? What will move\npermanently online, and what will still be considered worth appearing\nin person for? \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\nthe age of big data, will democracy fall short of an efficient and\nruthless Chinese model, as predicted by Yuval Harari, among others?\nCOVID-19\nhas shown how important transparency is when it comes to the\ninformation that authorities have<\/strong>\nand how valuable trust of citizens in official statements is. Data\nreliability of Chinese statistics is questionable. Meanwhile,\nautocracies of the likes of Iran or Russia are doing as badly as the\nUnited Kingdom or the United States \u2013 the oldest democracies in the\nworld. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Burdening\nthe working youth with the cost of pandemic only to save the elderly,\nwho in the \u201cold\u201d West have already managed to make for themselves\na comfortable life, would be yet another injustice on top of the\nalready existing ones. Labor\nmarket regulation and high taxation favor those who have already been\noperating on it<\/strong>.\nThe youth, a group that now includes also people around 40, will\nlikely struggle with the uncertainty of precarisation, impending\ndebt, and the need to take risks \u2013 which many of them cannot\nafford. Next social rebellions in the countries with a growing\nunemployment rate among the youth are just a matter of time. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will\nthe challenges the humanity is now facing attract the youth and other\nindividuals to be more involved in the public life? Is it possible\nthat the current situation reveals a leadership that we need, and one\nwhich would be capable of creating an emotion that might show the\nlink between a diagnosis and bold solutions? Are we humble enough to\nseek answers to the new questions and to take our fate into our own\nhands? \n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
